Yokohama is home to many renowned dojos in Japan. During our trip, we will have the opportunity to visit several of these dojos and train with local high school judo teams, offering a unique chance to experience the rich judo culture of the region firsthand.

Over the years, I'v had the privilege of visiting numerous dojos across Japan.  From local city clubs and elementry programs to middle school, high school, college and even professonal teams, each dojo showcases the depth and tradition of judo. Here are some of the dojos that I've had the honor of visiting with the students I have brought to Japan. 

kodokan judo institute

Every judoka dreams of visiting the legendary Kodokan. Located in Tokyo, this is the birthplace of judo. During our visit, you’ll have the opportunity to join a class led by world-renowned judoka and observe training on the main dojo floor. You can also explore the Kodokan Museum and its vast library, home to over 5,000 judo books, delving into the rich history and philosophy of the sport.

asahi dojo

Asahi Dai Sensei is a celebrated judoka who won gold at the 1983 Shoriki Cup and led his team to victory in the 95kg division at the Universiade. A key figure in the All Japan Judo Federation’s Training Committee, he is widely respected as the head coach of the prestigious Asahi Dojo. Over the years, he has coached internationally successful athletes such as Haga Ryunosuke and Yamamoto An, further solidifying his legacy in the world of judo.

shutoku jr & sr high school

Shutoku JR & SR High school is renowned as one of Japan's premier high school judo programs. Consistently ranked in the top 4 at national school tournaments. Shutoku has a legacy of producing exceptional judoka, from high school national champions to college national champions and athletes who have made it onto the international stage. 

omigawa dojo

Michihiro Omigawa, a distinguished judoka, won the bronze medal at the 2002 Asian Games and secured a silver medal at the 2001 Asian Championships. His expertise and accomplishments make Omigawa Dojo a remarkable place for judo training.

iwakura high school

Located in Ueno, Tokyo, Iwakura High School is guided by the exceptional leadership of Shinji Kido Sensei. A celebrated judoka, Kido Sensei earned a bronze medal at the 2010 Tokyo Grand Slam and the 2014 Paris Grand Slam. He further distinguished himself by securing gold medals at the 2015 Grand Slam Tyumen and the 2016 Asian Open Taipei, embodying the spirit of dedication and success that he now inspires in his students.

Located in Katsuura, Chiba, International Budo University is led by the renowned Tadanori Koshino Sensei.  He achieved remarkable success, winning the Kodokan Cup for four consecutive years (1989-1992) and the All-Japan Weight Class Judo Championships for three consecutive years (1989-1991). Koshino Sensei earned a silver medal at the 1989 World Judo Championships and claimed a gold medal at the 1991 World Championships. His illustrious Competitive career culminated with a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. After retiring, Koshino Sensei became the head coach at International Budo University in April of 1993 where he continues to train the next generation of judoka. 

jr east women's judo team

JR East Judo Team is a group of elite level athletes sponsored by JR East, the largest of Japan's seven railway companies. The company supports these athletes, enabling them to compete ini high-level tournaments while representing JR East. The women's judo team has produced exceptional judoka who have made their mark on the international stage.

Tanaka Sensei, a 5th-degree Kodokan black belt, is a Judo Kodokan Cup gold medalist in the -73kg class and placed 5th at the Sambo World Championships and a former Japan National Team member. He coaches at nonprofit organizations like Judo Yokohama and Washington Judo Academy. He has traveled the world conducting clinics for both judo and sambo and currently serves as the Japan Sambo Federation's National Team Head Coach. Tanaka Sensei shares his judo expertise with over 18,000 followers on Instagram, where he regularly posts instructional videos.Last year on our 2024 Japan Summer Training Camp we held a clinic in Japan and had judoka from around the world join us!

Judo Shopping and the Kodokan

On the first day, I will be leading the group to explore Tokyo, with visits to the Kusakura Store, the Mizuno Flagship Store, and the renowned Kodokan Judo Institute.

Kusakura Store

At the Kusakura store, you’ll have the opportunity to personalize your judo gi and belt with your name embroidered in Japanese. I will assist with translating names to ensure accuracy and will coordinate with the store to make sure your embroidered gi is ready in time for your departure.

Please note: Embroidery services are not available at the Mizuno Flagship Store

Kodokan Judo Institute

The Kodokan Judo Institute is the birthplace of judo and a must-visit for enthusiasts. If you’re interested in participating in a session, I’ll gather and submit the required information on your behalf to ensure a smooth experience.

Nearby Attractions

The Kodokan is located close to Tokyo Dome City, a lively area featuring great restaurants, shopping options, and even an amusement park! It’s a perfect spot to relax or explore.

what kind of things are there to do in yokohama 

Located just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is Japan's second-largest city is a vibrant blend of history and modernity. Once a quiet harbor town, it became Japan's first port city open to international trade, shaping the nations modernization. 

Top attractions 

- Minato Mirai 21: A stunning waterfront with over 600 shops, 200 restaurants, and an amusement park 

- Museums: Explore the cup noodle Museum, Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, Anpanman Museum, and the Nissan Engine Museum. 

- Family Fun: Visit one of Japans largest aquariums featuring marine life, shopping, dining, and theme park attractions.

 

Yokohama offers something for everyone, from food, fashion and family friendly experiences and of corse JUDO 

Getting to Tokyo 

There are 2 ways to get to Tokyo:

1. Taking the regular train is about an hour to an hour and a half 

2. Taking the bullet train costs more but you can get there in about 20 minutes

Should we fly into Narita or Haneda?

For those flying with the group, we will be arriving at Haneda Airport, and I will lead the group from the airport to the hotel where we’ll be staying.If you are flying separately, Haneda offers convenient access to Yokohama with a single direct train.

Which flight should I take?

You are free to book whichever flight is most convenient for you. Many families choose to take the same flight as I do, and I will announce my flight details as soon as it is booked.If you are flying from another state, you are not required to travel to Washington first unless you want to join the group flight.

Can I fly in early or stay later?

Yes, you are welcome to arrive early or stay later to explore Japan. However, the group hotel accommodations will only be arranged for the duration of the judo training camp.

Will we be able to use credit cards in Japan?

Most places in Japan now accept credit cards, though it’s always good to have some cash on hand for smaller vendors or certain areas.

 

How do we pay for train transportation?

You can use the Suica transportation card, which can now be downloaded directly to your phone. Simply scan your phone when entering and exiting stations, and your balance will update automatically.For children or those without phones, physical Suica cards are available. The cards can up loaded with money at  kiosks as needed.

 

How many gi’s should we bring?

We recommend bringing two gi’s, as the weather will likely be very hot during the training camp.

 

How do I get internet, texting, and calls in Japan?

Contact your cellphone carrier to arrange for international data. Most carriers offer plans that include internet, texting, and calls while in Japan.

 

Will there be time for shopping and sightseeing?

Yes! There will be opportunities for shopping and sightseeing before or after training sessions, depending on the schedule. Additionally, there will be off days where you can spend the entire day exploring.

 

Do we eat as a team?

We will have one team dinner during the trip. On other days, you’re free to choose where to eat. Many kids enjoy finding meals at Japanese convenience stores, which offer a variety of fun and delicious options.
